help with the low-cost spay/neuter program
MAX IS A HANDSOME KITTY.
Star of the North Humane Society coordinates a low-cost
spay/neuter program every other Thursday. (See our Spay/Neuter Program Page for detailed information). Owners register their pets at the Star of the North office at 5:45 AM on Thursday. At 6:30 AM the animals are transported by the Northland Clinic Spay/Neuter van to Duluth where the surgeries are performed that day. The animals spend the night and are brought back to the Star of the North office on Friday where the owners pick them up at 10:00 AM.
We are always in need of volunteers for this valuable service. On Thursday we need people to help with the registration process, labeling the animals and carriers, and loading the animals into the Northland van. We also need help on Friday when owners pick up their pets. Not many people want to be up so early, so if you don't mind getting up early, this could be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you! And you'll be helping control the animal population, reducing unwanted pets. Please CLICK HERE to fill out the Volunteer Application and then contact Cindy Mahon, Spay/Neuter Coordinator for Star of the North Humane Society, at [email protected]

help with fundraising projects and events
Do you like thinking up creative and fun ways to raise money? Or would you prefer to let someone else do the brainstorming while you get busy and help make things happen? Whatever your strengths, you can put them to good use helping raise funds to help the animals!
We have monthly (and sometimes more often per month!) opportunities for volunteering for these events and fundraising projects.
Much goes into organizing for these events. For fundraisers with silent auctions, we go around and ask businesses for donations. At the home shows and mobile adoptions, we need help to answer questions and help with the animals. We have bi-yearly rummage sales (sometimes more often!) and we could use help organizing, pricing, loading, setting up, breaking down, and selling.
If you are interested, please fill out the Volunteer Application.

assist with donated food pickup and distribution
Target, Walmart, and other generous individuals donate pet food to Star of the North. Star of the North distributes the food to community food shelf programs, individuals who are doing rescues in their neighborhood, and other people taking care of animals who have been identified as needing emergency assistance. We need people to pick up, log, and take the food to our storage site. We also need people to pick up food from our storage area and deliver it to organizations or individuals who need the pet food. If you are interested, please fill out the Volunteer Application.

Publicity
Do you love to write? Do you love to take pictures? We could use your help to get articles in the newspaper, make flyers and newsletters, post updates on Facebook, and help keep the website up to date. Please fill out a Volunteer Application if you're interested in any of these activities.
Star of the North Humane Society is operated solely by volunteers. We are currently only able to house cats. All of our dogs are in foster care. Our volunteers facilitate a low-cost spay/neuter program and distribute donated pet food to local food shelves, small rescue groups, and needy individuals. We also help with rehoming companion animals and with providing veterinary care for rescued animals. When you call, please leave a clear message. There is no one to take your initial call, but we make every effort to respond as soon as possible. If you have submitted an application to volunteer, your application will be processed as soon as possible and you will receive an email or phone call confirming the status.
